News: THE TRUTH ABOUT SPF IN COSMETICS
View postTHE TRUTH ABOUT SPF IN COSMETICS
With all the information about the dangers of sun damage we should be more educated than ever on how to protect ourselves. Many of us think we’re doing all we can, but are we?
According to the American Cancer Society, in the last 40 years skin cancer is on the rise at over 200%. That’s more than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. Nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer each year. The American Cancer Society also advises an SPF15 or greater for protection and to apply it every 2 hours. Apply every 2 hours! Just want to make sure you didn’t miss that.
The Beauty Industry is overflowing with makeup products containing SPF (Sun Protection Factor) …up to 50 and even 70 in the US. SPF is featured in skincare, primers, foundations and powders promising to deliver sunscreen protection. Though, these makeup products have sunscreen ingredients, they do not have the proper amount of coverage or the capabilities to protect against UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.
Most of us would need to reapply that SPF foundation at least 5-10 times a day to get the SPF coverage stated on that packaging. How many times do you apply and reapply your foundation? I apply my foundation and makeup once a day early in the morning…and it lasts all day long (thank goodness).
Do you think this might be creating a false sense of protection? Inadvertently misleading us to believe that those SPF cosmetics are protecting us from the harmful rays, when they are not?
Did you think applying cosmetic products with SPF and seeing the visible signs of makeup meant you were protected? When in reality you were NOT. Simply put, without the capabilities to protect against UVA and UVB rays, sunscreen makeup simply does not live up to the expectations.
It is time we took responsibility for our skin, with knowledge, choices and follow through. If you want to protect your skin from the sun you can apply actual sunscreen. A 30-50 SPF will give you protection up to 96%. Apply and reapply in summer and winter…as needed. There are also things like a hat, sunglasses, clothing and more. Let’s not forget, the most natural way to get vitamin D is by exposing your bare skin to sunlight. As with most things, everything in moderation!
Stay connected; there will be a follow up on how to use your favorite sunscreen in conjunction your favorite foundations and beauty products.

Council urged to invest in sun farm, the biggest renewable energy facility in the world by power
It was one of the most controversial announcements made by Australian Premier Mark McGowan last week as part of his ambitious plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30% over his four years in office.
On Wednesday, Turnbull said a solar farm on his property in southern NSW could cost $6 billion to build, adding that he would give NSW taxpayers the best possible deal.
The prime minister’s announcement that he would give states all the authority in solar planning was widely seen as a pushback against his previous commitments to introduce “pay-as-you-go” financing for solar energy projects.
Australia plans to expand its fleet of 300 megawatts of solar power by 2035, but the amount invested in the market over this period is only expected to increase by a third in the next five years to $18 billion.
That compares with investment of $1.7 billion annually by the private sector, but Turnbull insisted that the project was going to be financed through public policy and he would “put money in the ground” and give NSW taxpayers a better deal.
Turnbull has previously said that he wanted to cut his personal carbon emissions to the “tens of a tonnes”. But he has also been careful to point out that he had no plans to raise taxes in order to do so, nor did he support the emissions trading scheme (ETS).
“This is the most ambitious green technology in the world by technology, it’s really the biggest project that we’ve had from a renewable energy perspective,” Turnbull told Sydney’s ABC.
“We’ve got the largest solar project in the world. We’ve got wind, and water and biomass and we’ve got solar, and now we’re going to give the people of NSW, who voted for me, the best possible deal on this project.”
Turnbull was criticised by several commentators for what many saw as a double-standard between what he said and what has happened in Australia.
US congressman Henry Waxman said on Monday night that Turnbull’s announcement was “unprecedented” in its size and was contrary to the “free market ethos”.
On Tuesday, Malcolm Turnbull issued a press release saying he would “put the wind behind Australia”, promising to offer renewable energy funding that would not “pay as you go” for solar and wind power, and promising that he would use a “whole range of technology and innovation”.
US Congress member Paul Ryan, chairman of the congressional delegation to the United Nations climate talks in Paris this year, called on the US government to set an “energy market” that would allow it to protect the US environment and its own national security, without being beholden to countries that coul

Mcmanus signs new 3yr deal (but not the money)
The new four-year deal with Manchester City appears to have brought McLaren’s world ranking to a halt, with Alonso and Sauber, Ferrari and Honda all expected to move on in 2013.
This was likely to see the former McLaren powertrain partner moving back up the podium for his second season in the team’s Red Bull-led machinery, a move that is likely to give him a boost with the potential to secure further top eight places in the season ahead.
In addition to Ferrari and McLaren, there are also two team-mate slots left at the end of the season for Sauber and Mansell, whose positions in the new Red Bull-led Mercedes-Benz cars are likely to be challenged in 2013.
Mansell has expressed a desire to return to Mercedes for 2014, but his potential move to the team is a factor in the retirement of former McLaren driver Jenson Button.
Mansell’s potential switch back to the team, or another team, or perhaps an even further move back to Red Bull for 2013 will certainly impact how many points each driver earns as they prepare for their final race of the season.
At present it is hard to predict whether any of the teams with the biggest gaps in the drivers’ standings will have enough driver talent in place to stay competitive through the season.
So which will continue to ride the big boys?
McLaren
With his new deal ending in October and McLaren-hired Ferrari, Adrian Newey, moving away, it may not be as much of a surprise to see Mercedes taking over as they were in last season’s constructors’ championship.
But if last year’s form continues and even a single win can take the team to their next title they will surely look to improve on last season.
Jenson Button
Button could very well be the driver with the biggest future with Ferrari and a return to McLaren at some stage in 2013, although Ferrari will most certainly need their best drivers to score a win to push into the title race, which is what will be expected if Button leaves the team.
The pressure will increase for Button from McLaren and his potential move to Mercedes may well be one reason why they won’t look to rush him back.
Jolyon Palmer
Jolyon Palmer will most likely stay with McLaren-hired Ferrari for another season or so, although there are a host of drivers who are likely to leave and it is hard to see how it will help Mercedes’ overall title chances in the long term.
There is also potential for the likes of Massa, Rosberg and Vettel, but none of these are necessarily likely to stay in one team next season.
