What did you want to be when you grew up?

Growing up I was a tomboy. I was awkward, had bad skin, short, frizzy hair and body image issues. I played sports because I was tall, gawky and my grades were not that great. I played basketball, racquetball, volleyball and was a color guard. Later in high school, I discovered drama class and started participating in the school musicals, where I first began helping out with the hair and makeup. My dancing skills were pretty good; singing…not so much. But since I was able to coordinate the hair and makeup for the shows, I was able to participate in the leading roles. From Grease to Hair to Cabaret, it was always about the hair and makeup.

How did this tranform into your career as a makeup artist?

I never imagined being a professional makeup artist. I didn’t even know that was a career choice. As an eastern European immigrant, I thought that was something you did if you did not have a formal education. My mother was a hairdresser ever since I can remember. It was the type of work she was always able to get, traveling through several countries. Even when I was helping out with the hair and makeup in school, it was just because it seemed easy to do.
